I love candle spells for their simplicity. You can choose a candle color that corresponds to your purpose (some examples would be pink for love, green for environmental issues, red for passion or courage, etc) or you can always just use a white or natural beeswax candle.
There are two ways to use the energy of a candle, either for diminishing something--like power or control, or for releasing an intention to go to work in the universe--like spreading fierce love.
Always make sure your candles are in fireproof containers, and don't leave unattended. Inscribe the candle with a name, situation or your intention (or write it on paper and place beneath the container). It can be a word, a phrase or a just a symbol.
You can also anoint the candle with ritual oil. With or without anointing, "tag" the candle by saying, "This candle is ___________, and __________ is this candle." Fill in the blank with a name, a situation or what you wish to attract. Then say one of the following: "As the wax is consumed by flame until none is left, so shall __________ be diminished." Or, "As this candle burns the wax releases my intention to all corners of the universe, calling my desire for _____________ to me (or to another, or to all). Light the candle each day and spend five minutes (or longer if you wish) envisioning the end result.
For example, as of late I have burned orange candles with this intention: "This candle is __________ and ___________ is this candle. As the flame consumes the wax, so his power and influence is diminished. "
Another example would be, "This candle is Fierce Love and Fierce Love is this candle. As it burns the wax releases my intention to bring healing love to every corner of the universe, calling my desire for Fierce Love to become contagious."
